Hard to treat older, colder, damp homes.
17% of UK’s carbon emissions resulting from domestic heating.
Local area energy plans pick up areas for either district heating schemes or areas for Air Source Heat Pumps. This leaves out terraces; and the people in those terraces are experiencing greater deprivation, fuel poverty and are less able to invest or act.
The current fragmented approach is not working. Our energy advice teams are helping people who are increasingly worried about paying their bills and staying warm over winter.
There are six million smaller terraced homes in the UK, many in deprived areas.
Our pilot work is in Rossendale, Lancashire:
· 30% of Lancashire's homes are terraced - 14,000 in Rossendale alone.
· 20% of homes in the region are rented; that figure rises to 40% of terraced homes.
· 25% of private renters are in fuel poverty.
The easy alternative to get terraces to net zero will be electric boilers that push up costs for residents and strain the grid; in back-to-back homes and smaller terraces there’s not sufficient space for ASHPs unless all wall mounted – straining the grid.
