Net Zero Terrace Streets - our key principles.

Net Zero Terrace Streets - our key principles.
Stone fronted terraced homes built pre1914

·        Must be affordable so people can heat and power their homes - people need to budget and control costs.

·        No up front cost for residents.

·        As a business it is here for the long term - not a fit and forget approach.

·        Community engagement and ongoing support is at the heart of the approach.

·        The solution must enable demand side response, giving people an uncomplicated way to flex their electricity demand while meeting their needs and that including access to energy at cheap times. This will be automated by the Smart Local Energy System interfacing with the Home Energy Management System, so people do not have to fiddle around with controls. They will set parameters, so it meets their needs for heat and hot water at the times they require.

·        Use local and community energy where possible, rooftop and community solar or other generation to lower costs.

·        Long term investment will be raised. It will be repaid through a standing charge fee. This means no upfront cost to the homeowner.

·        We are looking to reach a grant free investable place-based model.

·        This will be a non-extractive model with returns to the community to keep the standing charge down.

·        As such it is likely to be operated by local cooperatives, community benefit societies or municipal schemes. A centralised standard with localised adjustments for different local contexts, but likely to be a licensed or socially franchised scheme.

·        We are designing a service that is standardised and replicable for scaling - so we can support a pipeline of projects across the country to aggregate schemes, this will help bring in finance and investment.

·        This will give us a robust methodology operated by a Community Interest Company - with a handbook to follow for local providers.
